LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Shahbaz Sharif said that the Punjab government was pursuing a comprehensive programme for public welfare in the province, in connection to which several uplift projects were being executed expeditiously.

He said this while giving a detailed briefing to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif regarding the progress of public welfare projects, during a high-level on Wednesday.

Opposition leader in National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, provincial ministers, MPAs, chief secretary, Board of Revenue’s senior member, Planning and Development chairman, administrative secretaries of various departments and divisional commissioners were also present during the meeting.

Talking about the Ashiana Housing Scheme (AHS), the CM praised the Punjab government for realising the dream of the common man of having his own house.

The houses provided under the AHS have better residential facilities than those found in the housing societies of the elite. He said that after the first AHS in Saroba Attari, Lahore, not only the scope of this project was being extended but land for the scheme had also been identified in 17 other districts of the province.

He said that 22 model villages had been constructed for those affected or displaced during the floods, adding that modern amenities and infrastructure was being provided to the people in these villages.

He said that the programme of distribution of 3 and 5 marla plots to the homeless living in both the rural and urban areas of the province had been finalised under which one lakh plots would be distributed to people in the rural areas and five lakh plots to those living in the urban centres.

Shahbaz said that the process of distribution of plots among the homeless would be carried out in a completely transparent manner, under the supervision of district-monitoring committees.

He said that a policy was also being formulated for awarding proprietary rights to the dwellers of katchi abadies, which would soon be given a final shape. He said that the Punjab government had also taken solid measures for provision of transport and other basic facilities to the masses. The CM then referred to the modern transport system that was recently launched in the metropolis, adding that its scope was being extended to other cities of the province as well. He also talked about the agreement signed between the Punjab government and the Turk companies for making Lahore a neat and clean city.

Appreciating the public welfare projects initiated by the of Punjab government, Nawaz Sharif said that the government’s policies should focus on the welfare of the common man as they had an equal right over the national resources.
