Karachi: Old moorings removed at Port Qasim clearing way for liquid cargo - Naveed Yaseen - 02-08-2009 08:21 AM

KARACHI: Four sets of moorings buried deep into the sea were removed on Saturday, which were an obstacle to Liquid Cargo Terminal Project being set up at Port Qasim through private sector.

These moorings were laid in 1990 for anchoring of naval ships adjacent to Marginal Wharf Berth No l. Over a period of about 20 years, heavy silting had made it difficult to retrieve these moorings that include buoys, chains and sinkers each weighing 28 tons, said a PQA release here on Saturday.

The area was allocated for setting up of Liquid Cargo Terminal in 2006 to handle imports of edible oil and export or molasses, on Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis.

The project is being sponsored by M/s FWQ, a joint venture of a Malaysian company Felda with Westbury of Pakistan.

Liquid Cargo Terminal is now well on its way to its completion. The berth structure is already complete and with some dredging work along side the jetty, the project would be ready for commissioning.
