Islamabad: Work on 11th avenue to start in June - Naveed Yaseen - 03-26-2009 07:56 AM

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) would start construction work of 11th Avenue in June to provide another signal-free artery between the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, as the design of the project is about to complete.

A senior CDA official said Wednesday that the authority has hired consultant to design the project that would be subject to approval from the CDA Board and would also be vetted by an independent architect.

He said the project is far more complicated than 7th and 9th Avenues, as it would consists of 11 intersections and if underpass is required at one place, the flyover is feasible for the other.

He said the underpasses

or flyovers would be constructed at Kashmir Highway, sectors

F-10 and F-11, Nazimuddin

Road, Ibn-e-Sina Road and Sowan Road.

He said previously the CDA had planned to award contracts of the road and flyover and underpasses separately but now it has been decided to execute the whole project under a single contract. The consultant has been given two-month time to prepare the design of the project, he added.

The official said the road construction would incur about Rs400 million and the cost of underpasses and flyover is yet to be added. The project would be launched in June this year and would take 18 months to complete.

He said the four-lane road would link the IJ Principal Road with Margalla Road while the latter is also being extended to Nicholson Monument at GT Road, providing another connection for the capital city to Peshawar and Lahore.

He said the CDA would shortly decide the fate of two tube wells and shrine near Kazmi Chowk, falling in the project site and assured that the project would not be delayed for the said reasons.

CDA has so far constructed six avenues including the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th and first phase of 9th Avenue.
