Lahore: Consumer court orders courier company to pay Rs 25,000 - Naveed Yaseen - 04-16-2009 06:12 AM

LAHORE: The Lahore Consumer Court has ordered a courier service company to pay Rs 25,000 to a consumer for failing to deliver a letter to her son in UK. The judge ordered the respondent to pay Rs 20,000 as compensation and Rs 5,000 as cost of the case to the complainant. He issued the order on the complaint of Roohi Maqsood of Lahore. The complainant submitted that she had dispatched the original certificates and degrees from matriculation to BA to her son Waqas Elahi, a student of computer sciences at Glasgow University through the company on April 23, 2008. She submitted that the documents never reached her son. She added that she contacted the respondent but no satisfactory answer was given. She said the company had been negligent in performing their obligations and delivered the documents to some other unauthorised person. She said she and her son had suffered mental agony, physical torture and financial loss. The counsel for the respondent told the court the documents were delivered to the proper consignee. He said the complaint was filed to blackmail and to extract money from his client. After hearing the arguments of both parties, the judge accepted the petition and ordered the respondent company to pay compensation and cost of the case to the complainant within 10 days. staff report
