The zero tolerance campaign against vehicles ply with ‘open transfer letters’ would be started from May 6, SSP (Traffic) Dr Sultan Azam Temuri told ‘The News’ here on Sunday.

He said that Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) would start the drive on April 28 with warnings but the campaign would be initiated rigorously from May 6 and the people driving the vehicles on ‘open transfer letters’ would not be spared.

The SSP said that the ITP has given 10-day time to the people using their vehicles on ‘open transfer letter’ for transferring their vehicles to their names. “We have directed the vehicle owners to get vehicles transferred to their own name within 10 days,” he added.

Keeping in view the current law and order situation, the ITP Thursday issued Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for all public service vehicles and taxis. According to the SOP, a driver of vehicle, if he is owner of the vehicle, should have CNIC, driving licence and documentary proof of the vehicle with him. The registration book of the vehicle should be on the name of owner.

In case, a person is driver and not owner of the vehicle he should have CNIC and attested copy of CNIC of the owner of the vehicle. The documentary proof (registration) of vehicle should be available with him. The driver should have an authority letter from the owner of the vehicle. The taxi drivers and drivers of Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) have to display PSVs licences/stickers. The driver of the vehicles on rent should have rental agreement of the showroom with him.

For the dumpers or trucks, it is necessary for drivers to display PSVs licence/stickers. In case, the driver of dumper or truck is not an owner of the vehicle, he should have CNIC and attested copy of CNIC of the owner of vehicle. The documentary proof (Registration) of the vehicle should be available with him. The dumper/truck drivers should have an authority letter from the owner of the vehicle.

After the period of 10 days, ITP will start checking of documents of the vehicles and if thereafter any owner/driver is failed to produce required documents on his name the action would be taken as per existing law.

The ITP had started maintaining computerised data of all vehicles registered nationwide, a move aimed at further tightening security in the face of recurring acts of terrorism in the country and also in capital, the SSP said.

“A database of the vehicles registered in all districts of the country is being collected and stored, enabling the ITP to check whole information about any vehicle entering the capital,” he added. The data will be available on helpline 1915 of the traffic police and this would help any member of the public to run a check on any vehicle, he said.
