LAHORE: About 3,000 policemen have been put on red alert in the wake of Thursday’s suicide blast in Wah Cantt, a source in the Police Department told Daily Times on Thursday.

Patrolling: He said the capital city police officer had directed the divisional superintendents of police (SPs) to reorganise patrolling in their jurisdiction and deploy cops at all the city’s entry and exit points.

“Taliban spokesman Maulvi Umer has demanded that the government stop the FATA operation, or else they will target Lahore and Multan,” he said, adding that they had also been ordered to keep an eye on 125 terrorists that were on the ‘Red List’.

Sensitive points: SP (Security) Rana Mansoorul Haq said additional policemen have been deployed at sensitive points, including government and foreign installations, imambargahs, shrines and mosques. He said station house officers (SHOs) had also been directed to thoroughly search hotels’ record and parking. Special personnel had also been deployed at the city’s entry and exit points, he said. Special squads had been directed for round-the-clock patrolling, especially in the congested areas, he added.

Security staff at hotels and hospitals, he said, had also been directed to keep a vigilant eye on suspicious people and luggage. He said the police would take strict action against the administration of any hotel where somebody was found staying without registration.

Deployment: Haq said that the law-enforcement agencies had been ordered to deploy more personnel at important installations, government buildings, airports, railways stations, trade centres and entertainment sites such as restaurants.

He said CCTV cameras had also been installed at the city’s sensitive points. He said Muhafiz, Mujahid and Tiger squads had also been directed to mount round-the-clock patrolling in the city.

He said the police had been equipped with sophisticated weapons, metal and explosive detectors. He said more police contingents have been deployed in plainclothes at all sensitive places. He said the reserve force had also been deployed to ensure adequate security measures
