Capital to see drastic changes soon
Eleven sectors to be handed over to private sector for development Monday, February 03, 2014 - islamabad—After failing to develop national capital on international standards, the Government has decided to make long-awaited amendments in CDA Ordinance, 1960, primarily allowing private developers to rebuild Islamabad. Insiders privy to such developments told this scribe a summary moved by CDA is lying with the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for approval which is expected soon. The sources said the PM is fully aware of the fast worsening situation in Islamabad where mushroom growth of slums, encroachments, land grabbing and corrupt officials in civic agency have eclipsed the beauty of national capital. Under the proposed amendments, eleven notified but stalled sectors including D-12, E-12, D-13, E-13, F-13, C-13, C-14, C-15, and C-16 will be handed over to reputed private developers to provide affordable accommodation to the people of Islamabad who have been deprived to get such shelter due to failure of CDA to build up housing stocks in the city. The sources said private developers have know- how and required funds to venture in the city to save it from further destruction in the hands of corrupt CDA officials, land mafia and a section of greedy affectees. The cash-starved civic body has no funds to pay compensation to the tune of Rs. 35 billion to the affectees now. Islamabad is facing shortfall of over fifty thousand housing units besides refurbishing of its old sewerage and water supply systems. Pending projects such as Kashmir Express highway connecting with M-2 and Margallah Avenue are pending due to want of funds. The sources said CDA can complete all mega projects in a short period of time in a public-private partnership. |
