KESC opens new grid station in Korangi

KARACHI: The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) has opened a new grid, Korangi South Grid Station (KSGS), as a part of its plan to improve the power transmission and distribution system of the city.

The grid station was jointly inaugurated by Karachi Nazim Mustafa Kamal and KESC CEO Naveed Ismail. It was announced, on the occasion, that KESC will observe 2009 as an energy conservation year for Karachi, in partnership with City District Government Karachi (CDGK). The KSGS is one of the eight grid station projects being worked upon by the KESC and is the first one to be connected with the national grid. The company plans to bring three more grids for the city’s power distribution system by March to strengthen Karachi’s power grid and ensure a uniform power supply. According to KESC officials, this grid will cover all residential consumers of Korangi and some parts of Landhi, supplying improved voltage. The enhanced transformation capacity of 80MVA will serve the pending industrial and residential load. The KSGS will also improve system reliability in the area and prevent outages.

The areas that will directly benefit from this grid are Korangi sectors including 50B, 50A, 51A, 51B, 51D, 41A, 48B, 48H, Juma Goth, Ali Akbar Shah Both, Korangi G Market, Korangi D Area, G area, 100 Quarters, D Area Quarters, Korangi 2 ½ and 3 ½ areas.

Speaking on the occasion, Kamal said that the power crisis had affected the ongoing uplift work in the city. “As the nazim of Karachi, I am the most affected person of the city,” he said. He suggested installing a special signal system in televisions for conserving energy. He elaborated by saying that the system will consist of two lights, red and green. “If the load in the city is normal then the green light should turn on and if the load is not normal the red light should turn on indicating that all extra electrical appliances should be turned off,” he added.

Ismail announced that the ban on installing new power connections in the city will be lifted from February 19. It is pertinent to mention here that KESC’s new administration had imposed a ban on new electricity connections after taking charge of the utility. He said we are aiming at conserving 200MW for the city in the next two years while adding that energy conservation is the best way to meet the escalating needs of our future. Kamal stated that the KESC will be given full support and asked industrial, commercial and residential electricity consumers to join hands with CDGK and KESC in order to achieve this goal.
