What’s in and what’s out
We begin another year and another decade. While time does seem to be passing by quickly we still await, as a country, to be painted green by it - to signify peace and progress - as opposed to the existing colour red, which is a symbol of being unsafe in every sense of the word. Here is a quick recap of all that is in and all that is not in Pakistan at the beginning of a new year.
It is in to raise a furore over issues like the death of a house maid called Shazia Masih, who died in mysterious circumstances, while in the employ of a lawyer. The lawyers see a marked decline in their popularity and are out as a group. Coke Studio is in, while film studios remain out. Having babies in rickshaws is in, but VIP motorcades holding up traffic is out. The Chinese Prime Minister is popular, but the French President is not.
Fashion weeks are in and educational seminars are out. Fake degrees are in and HEC is out. Women’s Cricket team is really in, while the Men’s Cricket team is truly out. Rahat Fateh Ali is in, but qawwali is out. Social work is in and pointless partying is out. Nargis Sethi is in, but her boss is out. TV dramas are really back, but reality shows are a no-no.
Chaudhry Nisar and Waseem Akhtar are in the doghouse for bad behaviour, but Khurram Dastgir and Farouk Sattar get marks for restraint. The ex-Minister for Religious Affairs is in, but the present Minister with the same portfolio is not. After the WikiLeaks disclosures, the establishment is out and Imran Khan is in. From among the bureaucracy, Zafar Qureshi is in, while Kamran Lashari is out. Maulana Fazalur Rehman is out, but Azam Swati is not.
