CDA to arrange anti-litter awareness camps in slums

ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has planned to arrange anti-litter camps to raise awareness among the residents of Katchi Abadis to ensure cleanliness in the Federal Capital next month.

The awareness material including brochures, pamphlets and booklets highlighting the importance of cleanliness will be distributed among residents of Katchi Abadis in G-7, G-8 and in the surroundings of different sectors.

Talking to APP on Saturday, Director Sanitation Captain ® Muhammad Faiz said that the fine had been imposed on over 600 residents for violating anti-littering law in the recent past, discouraging others to abstain from defacing the federal capital.

He said under Section 5(29) of the CDA Environmental Protection Regulations 2008, a person or persons violating the anti-littering law can be fined up to Rs300 on the spot which has been started three months ago.

The Sanitation Directorate has formally deputed a task force in sectors F-6, F-7 and F-10 and now in F-11 and fine is being imposed during the third phase of the ongoing anti-litter drive.

However, vast publicity campaign through banners, pamphlets, messages on large LCDs has been carried out by the CDA during the first and second phase of the drive commencing from April.

Capt Faiz said that the purpose of imposing fine is to discourage the throwing of garbage and junk in an ill-planned manner and raise awareness among the people in this regard as no municipality of the world can succeed to keep the city clean without cooperation of the residents.

"The residents of the city must join hands with the CDA to make it an
exemplary city as the anti-litter campaign was launched with an aim to
attract people towards the importance of hygiene and it was their social responsibility to protect the environment," Capt Faiz said.

All the markets have been provided with colourful dustbins and solid-waste from the different sectors and avenues of the city has been shifted to the final disposal site. Awareness material has also been distributed in the schools, markets and in the passengers vans.
Capt. Faiz said 17 sectors are being covered under the campaign while various zones comprising four to five sectors have been made. Fifty percent of the fine amount will be given to the sanitary officials, who will issue challans to people on violation of regulations and defacing the city.

However, the civic body has also announced grant of one month additional salary for its sanitary supervisors as a reward for ensuring cleanliness in the Federal Capital.

The Authority has also approved additional staff for the Sanitation Directorate and other equipment in order to properly maintain the cleanliness and beautification of the city.

Non-Governmental Organizations, Chamber of Commerce, Police and Traffic Police are also being taken on board for raising awareness among the people, he added. (APP)
