Lahore: Park to replace IMAX Theatre: CM

LAHORE: The IMAX Theatre will be demolished, and the Doongi ground will be converted into a beautiful park, as per the recommendations of the committee set up for this purpose, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said on Monday.

He was presiding over a meeting at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat. Adviser to Chief Minister Pervaiz Rasheed, Member of National Assembly Umar Suhail, Member of Punjab Assembly Saeed Elahi, Usman Pirzada, and various other senior officers were present. Shahbaz said the former government had spent Rs 25 crore on the project and had even made the payment for machinery, which was still lying abroad with the supplier. He said a large sum of money had been spent on the project from the public exchequer, adding that he had ordered immediate import of the machinery.

The meeting was informed that the Punjab government would have to bear an additional annual expenditure of Rs 8 crore to continue the project. The participants of the meeting unanimously agreed upon the conclusion that the government could not afford such an extravagant entertainment project at this point in time, as there were greater issues to adhere to.
