Ministry, CDA helpless to get G-6 flats vacated from police

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Housing and Works and Capital Development Authority (CDA) has not been able to evict illegal occupants from 200 government flats in Sector G-6 Aabpara since long.

Policemen and civilians have illegally occupied all the flats built by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) during 1990s at Aabpara.

A senior police officer admitting illegal act on part of police said the policemen occupying 96 flats have obtained a stay order from the Lahore High Court (LHC) when the department tried to evict. “We have been persuading them for long to move out but mere words don’t work,” the officer who is dealing with the issue told APP.

There were 96 local policemen who allegedly grabbed them up some 22 months ago. They are not only occupying the flats illegally but also pay no utility bills. Some have been daring enough to rent out the flat, which does not belong to them in the first place.

The flats were occupied when they were temporarily provided to the Anti Riot Squad of Islamabad police and Punjab Constabulary officials in 2007. These officials were called in to help Islamabad Administration to maintain law and order in the pre and post days of the Lal Masjid operation. “We cannot find affordable residence in the city except at the outskirts but coming from there everyday is a nuisance,” said a police constable who lives in one of the flats. Police officials living in the flats claimed that they were not the lone occupants some Capital Development Authority officials were also occupying more than 50 flats in the building.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on August 29 restored its stay order halting vacation of G-6 flats, which have been occupied by police
