Lahore: Gulberg Town admin launches campaign against illegal parking - Naveed Yaseen - 03-09-2009 06:11 AM Rickshaws, pickups, taxis main targets By Afnan Khan LAHORE: The Gulberg Town Administration has launched an operation against illegal parking of pickup trucks, taxis and rickshaws, especially in the Liberty Market and the Main Market as they cause traffic jams during working hours. Hundreds of vehicle owners have developed ‘permanent stations’ in different markets. The most traffic jams are at the Gulberg Main Market as it is the largest market of the area. The pickups are used for the transportation of furniture and electrical appliances that cannot fit into a normal car and are, therefore, parked in the back alleys of Liberty Market, near Capri Cinema, nearby service lanes and around the Liberty Roundabout. Market visitors face difficulties in finding parking spaces for their vehicles and the traffic jams caused by the illegally parked vehicles. Gulberg Town Municipal Officer (TMO) Ali Abbas Bokhari said there were several illegal ‘parking stations’ present in different parts of the town. He said he had recently conducted an operation in Gulberg Main Market and removed dozens of vehicles from the illegally built parking stations in the market. He said he had done this as part of the government’s campaign to recover public land. He said the town administration had warned all drivers, adding that they would be fined if they violated the law again. He said the recovered land might be used to build parking lots, adding that the Main Market was in need of a proper parking lot. He said the administration would also conduct similar operations in Model Town, Barkat Market, Firdous Market and Ghalib Market. http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=2009\03\09\story_9-3-2009_pg13_3 |
