ISLAMABAD: Chashma Nuclear Power Plant of 325 megawatts (MW) has been closed due to some technical problems in a special motor, which is responsible to provide cooling to the reactor.
According to a well-paced source in the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), Chashma Nuclear Power Plant-1 (ChashNuPP-1) has been closed down as some faults have been detected in the special motor, which ensures the cooling of reactor as without cooling it is not possible to make the plants operational.
The source said that experts are working vigorously to cope with the situation and by Friday the plant is most likely to come on stream again. "There are chances that the plant becomes operational before Friday next."
When contacted, Pepco spokesman Tahir Basharat Cheema confirmed the closure of the two plants. However, he hoped that Chashma plant is to soon become operational and will provide solace to Pepco as the 300MW power is made available by the plant round the clock.
However, an official at the Ministry of Water and Power said that Pepco is currently providing 600 to 800 MW per day to the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) despite the fact that the government has ordered Pepco to provide not more than 250MW electricity to KESC in the wake of some gas allocation to thermal powerhouses in Karachi. "The KESC should need to purchase power from IPPs more and invest in the power sector also to cater to power demand of Karachiites."
