Lahore: Business district planned for City - LahoreEstate - 10-23-2009 08:59 AM LAHORE - For creating more investment, business and employment opportunities, the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) has planned to establish a Central Business District (CBD) in the City comprising of Jail Road, Main Boulevard Gulberg, MM Alam Road, part of Hali Road and Sharah-e-Noor Jehan. In this connection, work on the first phase has already been started in the form of ‘Park and Ride’ structure at the Liberty Market. Under the newly introduced Land Use (Classification, Re-classification and Redevelopment) Rules 2009, the LDA has also allowed commercialisation activity along the full stretch of 17 roads situated within its controlled area besides permitting business ventures on specified segments of 12 thoroughfares in the metropolis. The 17 roads that have been commercialised completely include Jail Road (Ghaus Al Azam Road), Main Boulevard Gulberg, MM Alam Road Gulberg (Specified area), Stadium Road (Noor Jehan Road), Quaid-e-Azam Road, Tariq Road, Link MM Alam Road, Road Behind Liberty Market, Firdous Market Road (Ali Zeb Road), Link Road Main Market (Shezan Side), Link Road Main Market (Auriga Side), Chen One Road (segment of Ghalib Road), part of Civic Centre Road Garden Town, Model Town Link Road, Al-Madina Road Township, Bagrian Road and Main Boulevard Samanabad. The other 12 roads where commercial activity has been allowed on specified segments are: Maulana Shaukat Ali Road, Main Boulevard Shadman, Main Boulevard Garden Town, College Road Gulberg, Park Road Ali Zeb Avenue Gulberg, Abul Hasan Isphahani Road Faisal Town, Zafar Ali Road Gulberg 5, Link MM Alam Road, Shadman part of Race Course Road, Link Road Main Boulevard Garden Town, Wahdat Road, Ferozepur Road and UBD Canal To Railway Crossing. However, the properties that had already been commercialised on permanent basis on these 12 roads are not affected by the decision. But in the future, only specified areas will be allowed for commercial activity. The LDA, with a clear comprehension of the challenges being faced, is committed to substitute policies and practices which are damaging to the urban spatial, economic and fabric structure of the City with the ones which are modern, business-friendly and in line with international best practices of urban design and planning. This process involves extensive studies for which a clear programme has been chalked out. LDA intends to conduct comprehensive urban studies throughout the controlled area, and in the light thereof, the roads may be reclassified. Moreover, it aims to complete the comprehensive studies within a period of 12 to 24 months. http://www.nation.com.pk/pakistan-news-newspaper-daily-english-online/Regional/Lahore/23-Oct-2009/Business-district-planned-for-City |
