Presidency suggests writing ‘Zardari’ in father’s name column for all orphans - Naveed Yaseen - 11-11-2009 06:54 AM

ISLAMABAD: The Senate’s Standing Committee on Social Welfare and Special Education on Tuesday considered putting President Asif Zardari’s name in the ‘father’s name’ column in orphans’ legal documents. The body also called for taking measures to bring about a qualitative change in the lives of physically challenged children. The body also suggested that the government establish more educational and vocational training centres for such children. Senator Sajid Mir chaired the committee meeting at Parliament House. Social Welfare and Special Education Secretary Imtiaz Qazi said the Presidency had suggested them to prepare a list of the orphans and to put Zardari’s name in the ‘father’s name’ column in their legal documents. He said another suggestion being considered was putting Abdul Sattar Edhi’s name there because he was actively taking care of such children. Senator Sajid Mir said a joint meeting of the ministries of Social Welfare and Interior should decide the matter. The body praised the government’s special card scheme for the rehabilitation of these children. Federal Social Welfare and Special Education Minister Samina Khalid Ghurki told the body the government was taking measures for social and economic security of these people. She said a complaint cell had been set up to address their problems. staff report
