* Model Town residents to take legal action against demolition of botanical gardens

By Afnan Khan

LAHORE: Residents of the Model Town Society (MTS) have decided to protest the demolition of J Block botanical gardens to make way for commercial activities, and will launch an awareness campaign against the MTS administration’s decision.

Daily Times reported a few days ago that with assistance from police, the MTS administration had forcibly entered the premises of the nursery with bulldozers and cutters and started cutting trees and plants.

The owners duly moved the court, which stayed the operation, but the MTS administration had once again started operating at the premises in violation of legal orders. Mian Abrar, owner of the nursery, told Daily Times that MTS administrators were continuing cutting trees in the botanical gardens despite stay orders. He said the nursery’s owners, with the help of MTS residents, were preparing to take a legal action against the MTS authorities, as the management had refused to stop their activities. He said the nursery’s owners had already paid the rent to the MTS administration in advance and there lease agreement was valid until 2014. A resident of J block, Peerzada Muhammad Zaki, told Daily Times that residents were united against the move by the MTS administration, adding that MTS members would meet the society high-ups to convince them of not to demolish the nursery.

PCS Registrar Maqsood Qadir Shah told Daily Times that he was not aware of the incident and could not intervene. He said he was responsible for dozens of other residential societies in his jurisdiction and so far, no MTS resident had taken up the issue with him.
