Action against heads of schools showing poor results
Saturday, September 13, 2008 By Khalid Khattak LAHORE The Punjab Schools Education Department has decided to take disciplinary action including removal from service against heads of those government schools of the province which produced zero percent results in the matriculation annual examinations 2008. The News has reliably learnt that the department had recently collected data regarding the government schools which produced extremely discouraging and poor results in the matric exams. There are 113 government schools from across the province which produced zero percent results in the said examination compelling the department to initiate action against the heads of such schools. It is pertinent to mention here that recently announced results of matriculation annual examinations 2008 of the Board of Intermediate & Secondary Education (BISE) Lahore exposed the poor performance of government schools as almost all the top positions were clinched by students of private sector schools. The overall top position was achieved by a student of a private school while second position which was shared by two students of private schools. Among the overall toppers there was only one student of government school who secured the third place among the overall toppers. Interestingly the toppers of Science Group (Boys & Girls) as well as of the Humanities Group (Boys & Girls) were students of the private sector schools. An official, seeking anonymity, said the performance of government schools in other boards of the province was also not so good. Sources in the Punjab Schools Education Department said that the department had started serving notices to heads of the schools under the Punjab Employees Efficiency, Discipline and Accountability (PEEDA) Act 2006 adding through these show-cause notices the heads were being asked to explain the reasons for zero percent results in matric exam. They further said after giving opportunity of hearing to heads of the schools the department would impose various penalties including even major penalty of removal from service under the PEEDA Act. They added that the department had also been serving warning notices to heads of all those schools which produced less than 10 percent results in the said exam adding such schools would be warned of stern action to produce better results in next exams. In order to recognize efforts of heads of the schools which produced 100 percent result the department would issue appreciation letters to them. The sources said that there were 412 schools which produced hundred percent results in the recent matric exam adding heads of all these schools would be presented appreciation letters to encourage and recognize their efforts. When contacted, Secretary Schools Education Department Punjab Nadeem Ashraf confirmed that the department would take disciplinary action against heads of schools which produced zero percent results in recent matriculation exams. He said warning notices would also be issued to heads of those schools which produced less than 10 percent results, adding in order to recognize excellent results the department would be presenting letters of appreciation to heads of such institutions. http://www.thenews.com.pk/daily_detail.asp?id=135448 |
