Rawalpindi: 18 SHOs get notices for alarming crime rate

RAWALPINDI: Regional Police Officer (RPO) Nasir Khan Durrani on Monday served show cause notices on 18 station house officers (SHOs) of Rawalpindi for alarming rate of crime in the district.

Those who were served with show cause notices included SHOs of New Town, Pirwadhai, Civil Lines, RA Bazaar, Westridge, Airport, Banni, Sadiqabad, Waris Khan, Ganjmandi, Saddar Bairooni, Wah Cantonment, Gujar Khan, Murree, Kahuta, Rawat and Jatli police stations.

According to a press release, a crime review meeting was held at the RPO office in which City Police Officer (CPO) Rao Muhammad Iqbal gave a presentation about the crime situation in the district. The RPO took serious notice of increase in crime rate and directed the police officers to take effective measures to control it.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operation Maqsood Khan, Superintendent of Police (SP) Rawal Town Khurram Shahzad, SP Saddar Ahmad Hassan Chohan, SP Investigation Rana Shahid, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Legal Fida Hussain and all DSPs of Rawalpindi district attended the meeting.

The CPO giving presentation on crime state during last nine months (January to September 2008) said police registered 11,126 cases during this period as compared to 11,512 cases in the corresponding period in 2007.

He said a rise was observed in murder cases as 215 murders took place in 2008 as compared to 183 in the corresponding period in 2007. There was also an increase of five cases of attempted murder this year as compared to the corresponding period in 2007, he said.

He said the dacoity cases were also on the rise as 47 cases of dacoity and 316 cases of robbery took place in 2008 as compared to 36 and 314 cases respectively in 2007.

He said in September this year there was an alarming rise in crime rate in Rawalpindi district during Eid shopping. Most of the criminal activities occurred in the limits of New Town, Saddar Bairooni, Wah Cantonment, Gujar Khan and Kahuta police stations, he added.

In view of current law and order situation the security arrangements were also reviewed. Durrani directed the police officers to use sniffer dogs for detection of explosive materials at important checkpoints with the assistance of Special Branch, Rawalpindi. He directed all the SDPOs and SPs to review the security arrangements at sensitive establishments.
