Karachi: KPT to set up Rs 300 million desalination plants
KARACHI: Karachi Port Trust has planned to set up desalination plants at Manora, Keemari Oil Installation area and TPX at an estimated cost of Rs 300 million in order to meet its water requirement for its residential areas and ships calling Karachi Port.
The plan for setting up desalination plants is made under the direction of prime minister of Pakistan. The three desalination plants, each capable of producing 200,000 imperial gallons per day, will be set up in different phases to meet the clean drinking water requirements of KPT, an official of KPT told Daily Times. Under the phase-1, a plant at Manora Island will be set up for which tenders were invited and opened on January 12, 2009, he said adding that its work will initiate after fulfillment of formalities by March 2009 and would attain completion in December, this year. The desalination plants in Keamari Oil Installation area and TPX are planned for the next phase. Tenders for the hydro-geological investigation for ascertaining water quality and quantity for these areas are in process of awarding, which will commence shortly. http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp...2009_pg5_3 |
