Karachi: Sakhi Hassan-Sarjani road worth Rs 800m inaugurated
By Irfan Aligi
KARACHI: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan and City Nazim Mustafa Kamal jointly inaugurated the Road-5,000, an eight-lane dual main carriageway from Sakhi Hassan Roundabout to Sarjani Chowrangi that is 6,000 metres long and 48 feet wide, on Sunday. The project was worth Rs 800 million It is pertinent to mention that the City Nazim Mustafa Kamal had specially arranged for the funds for the construction of Road-5,000. The construction started in September 2005 and was completed on December 2008 while the road was informally opened for the traffic so as to prevent gridlocks. The Road-5,000 opens into Signal Free Corridor (SFC)-II at Nagan Chowrangi and connects New Karachi Town, North Nazimabad Town, Liaquatabad Town and Gulberg Town through side arteries. It contains the largest single storm-water drainage system of 10-feet width commencing from Surjani Town to Gujjar Nullah and is entirely signal-free. Keeping in view the increasing population in Sarjani Town, the CDGK planned to construct the Road-5,000. It is pertinent to mention that the formal inauguration of the Road-5,000 was delayed for six months due to certain reasons including the construction of storm water drainage system, creation of several U-turns, completion of the Nagan Chowrangi Flyover and the construction of a green belt. Following directives from Kamal to the Parks and Horticulture Department (P&HD) Director, 250,000 saplings were planted in the green belt on the Road-5,000. This has cost the CDGK Rs 55 million because the green belt project stretches from Rashid Minhas Road in Gulshan-e Iqbal to Sarjani Town. http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp...009_pg12_2 |
