‘Sharp divisions inside White House over Afghan policy’
LAHORE: CNN claimed on Wednesday that there is “clearly a sharp division” inside the White House over US policy in Afghanistan. “And it’s a rift that could be the sharpest break we’ve seen in years between a president and his commanding general in the field,” said David Gergen – a senior political analyst for CNN – referring to Gen Stanley McChrystal’s plans for an increased number of troops in Afghanistan. Some helping to shape the Afghan strategy support a large number of troops focused on fighting the Taliban. Others favour a counter-terrorism strategy in which a limited number of troops would target only Al Qaeda. daily times monitor
