CNG in Pakistan sold at double price compared to India, a net importer of natural gas

KARACHI: In India, a country that is an importer, CNG is sold at Rs 22 per kg, while Pakistan, which produces CNG, sells it at Rs 44.50, said Sindh Bar Council (SBC) Human Rights Committee Chairman Advocate Aqil Lodhi in a press statement Wednesday.

He rejected the recent reduction of Rs 4 per kg as per the agreement between the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and CNG pump owners’ and dealers’ associations, saying that CNG-producing companies charge Rs 23.50 per kg, while pump owners and dealers make a 120 percent profit per kg by selling at Rs 44.50. Instead of decreasing the price by Rs 4, the OGRA should have fixed the profit of pump owners and dealers at Rs 4 per kg, giving some relief to the people, he said. In effect, he called for a reduction of the price of CNG to Rs 27.50 per kg.

He accused OGRA of caring more for millionaire CNG pump-owners and dealers instead of the consumers, the common man. He demanded that the government and OGRA fix the maximum profit at Rs 5 per kg for pump owners and dealers, so that CNG is sold at Rs 29 per kg. staff report
