Sui Northern Gas develops geyser modification for energy efficiency
LAHORE: Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited, in collaboration with Chemical Engineering Department of University of Engineering and Technology Lahore, has prepared a modified design of the baffle of domestic geysers to maximise combustion and thermal efficiency and save gas.

A presentation in this regard was given by Prof Dr A R Saleemi to leading manufacturers of natural gas water geysers and appliances on Thursday at SNGPL head office. SNGPL Managing Director Rashid Lone was also present.

Experimental data show that combustion/thermal efficiency of existing geysers can be increased up to 40 per cent without any significant increase in manufacturing cost and could save 26 per cent natural gas per geyser.

The water geyser with the designated baffle could maintain 90-98 per cent net combustion efficiency as compared to 70-80 per cent of conventional geyser. It consumes less time (30-40 per cent) to fully heat up water up to the required temperature as compared to the conventional geyser. Thus, gas consumption can be reduced by 30-40 per cent that will reduce energy billing.

Low exhaust temperature allows venting of gases in economical and easier way. Less heat losses occur as compared to conventional water geyser because it overcomes the problem of incomplete combustion.

Speaking on the occasion, the SNGPL MD said if the modification is made in geyser it will not only reduce the gas bill but would also reduce deforestation resulting in improved environmental conditions and better health for the consumers.
