Housing scheme for twin city journalists being considered: Information Minister

ISLAMABAD: The government is considering the launch of a housing scheme for Islamabad/Rawalpindi journalists, said Information Minister Sherry Rehman on Sunday.

The minister told reporters here that similar schemes for the journalists of Karachi and Lahore were also under consideration.

She said the government was bound to protect interests of journalists, who were an important pillar of democracy. She said the government believed a stronger democracy was linked to stronger media.

“We’re willing to strengthen media in all areas by extending every possible support,” she said.

Sherry said there was a great divide between packages offered to journalists at different levels in a single organisation.

She said financial constraints led to stress among journalists and tended to compromise quality of their work.
