Plazas: SC refuses to issue stay order
F.P. Report ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has refused to issue stay orders against the demolition of illegally built multistorey buildings in Lahore by the government of Punjab. A three member bench headed by Justice Javed Iqbal and comprising Justice Raja Fayyaz Ahmad and Justice Sair Ali was hearing the case of Suo Moto Notice against illegally constructed high-rise buildings in the metropolis here on Thursday. The Superior Court remarked that the verdict would be given after analyzing the report from the commission constituted by the SC and hearing arguments from all the stakeholders in this regard. Justice Javed Iqbal remarked that high-rise buildings could only be constructed under rules and regulations and not illegally. Justice Raja Fayyaz in his remarks observed that a large number of plazas constructed in the country were not according to the plan. The apex court remarked that decision in this regard would be according to the law as it was not worthwhile that who was the owner of those multistory buildings. Counsel for the Builders and Developers Association, Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan appeared before the court and argued that these buildings were constructed with billions or rupees for boosting economic development in the country. He said that multistorey buildings were being constructed in the rest of the world with very rapid pace but the situation in Pakistan was otherwise. Ahsan argued before the court that the report of commission was not accurate adding that the Lahore Development Authority had no mandate to pull down the buildings. He further said that as many as 200 families were depending on each plaza. The court therefore remarked point of view stakeholders would be heard before giving judgment in this regard. The court then adjourned the hearing till today (Friday).
