New building laws to save 30% energy
by Muhammad Qasim
Ministry of Environment has almost finalised the Building Energy Codes to ensure conservation in the wake of the increasing energy demands. The implementation on the energy codes would be initiated at the earliest and would be mandatory after five years from now that would help control wastage and save 20-30 per cent of the energy being used in buildings. Federal Minister for Environment Hameed Ullah Jan Afridi stated this while inaugurating a one-day workshop on Building Energy Codes, organised by the ministry here Wednesday. The federal minister said the building sector remains critical amongst the major energy consuming sectors, such as transport and agriculture, and consumes 30 per cent of the energy being used in the country. He further said demand in this sector is increasing by 40 per cent per annum, adding that high-energy use also leads to more carbon emissions due to the burning of fossil fuels and resultantly contributes towards environmental degradation. “We should take the implementation of Building Energy Codes as a challenge to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions,” Afridi said and added that the provincial governments should take lead in implementing the building codes and take necessary measures for the compliance of the private sector in this regard. http://www.thenews.com.pk/daily_detail.asp?id=162227 |
