Water contamination at Rawal Lake: CDA gets 2 months to install treatment plant on tributaries

* Environment minister concerned over increasing number of hepatitis patients
* WASA blames human activities in catchment areas of lake for pollution

ISLAMABAD: Environment Minister Hamidullah Jan Afridi on Monday asked Capital Development Authority (CDA) to install water treatment plants on tributaries of Rawal Lake.

“ CDA should initiate installation of treatment plants on tributaries of Rawal Lake within two months,” the minister said during a meeting.

He expressed concerns over mounting contamination in the lake and called for an immediate action to control it.

WASA managing director (MD) made a detailed presentation highlighting how human activities were responsible for water contamination in the catchments of Rawal Lake.

The WASA report said the lake had become an oxidation pond as huge amount of raw sewage was coming into it from from Quaid-e-Azam University, Noorpur Shahan, Balli Gala, Bahara Kahu, Diplomatic Enclave and Murree.

It said WASA had to spend a huge amount of money to treat water. Representative from 10th Corp said due to increasing water contamination, the number of Hepatitis C patients was increasing every year.

The minister took serious note of this situation and pressed on the need to address the issue of contamination on emergency basis.

Environment Secretary Kamran Lashari pointed out that during his tenure as CDA chairman, installation of a treatment plant on the main tributaries of Rawal Lake was agreed upon.

He said it was astonishing that CDA had not taken concrete measures to put up any treatment facility at Rawal Lake.

The CDA director general stated that efforts would be made to expedite the process of installation of a treatment plant.

It was decided that CDA, WASA and Pak-EPA would immediately ensure effective enforcement of laws and start installation of the treatment plant.

The minister asked Pak-EPA to control construction activities upstream and take action against polluters. app
