Unemployment can cause mental disorders
KARACHI (PPI) - Thousands of people are becoming patients of mental disorders owing to rising unemployment, domestic feuds, poverty and other problems in the country.
There are very low number of doctors to deal with mental disorder cases, while no exclusive government centre in the city is established for mentally disorder patients.
Executive Director Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre who is also incharge of Psychiatric Ward, Prof Musarrat Hussain, Incharge Karachi Psychiatric Hospital and Psychiatrist Dr Mobeen Akhtar, President Pakistan Association for Mental Health Dr Haroon and President Pakistan Medical Association Karachi Dr Aziz Tang expressed these views while talking to PPI on the eve of World Mental Disorder Day.
Prof Musarrat Hussain said the disease of mental disorders raised in men during last 10 years as compare to women. He said 600 patients of various mental diseases are admitted annually to Psychiatric Ward of JPMC besides reporting over 80 new such cases. The problem of mental disorders is being reported in children, women, men and aged people without any discriminating of gender or age, he added.
He elaborated that in children, stubbornness, peevishness and lack of interest towards studies are causing mental disorders in children and their parents. He also pointed out the shortage of psychiatrists in the country.
Dr Mobeen Akhtar said the mental health day is held throughout the world on 10 October each year in order to raise awareness amongst people regarding mental diseases. He said mental disorder often develop through anxiety, family issues, poverty, hunger and intensity of hot or cold weather. He informed that 25 per cent people of the world are suffering from mental diseases.
Dr Mobeen said thousands of people suffering from mental diseases visit Karachi Psychiatric Hospital annually. Anxiety, phobia, financial issues and drug addictions are also cause of mantel disorders.
He added 20 million people need treatment but they did not visit hospitals yet due to lack of awareness. Dr Haroon said 1.6 million people are suffering from mental disorders, out of 160 million of population of the country. He said there is a huge shortage of psychiatrists in the country, specially in rural areas.
Dr Aziz Khan Tang said there is a dire need to create awareness and establish centres regarding mental diseases. He said the people suffering from mental disorders, are considered mental, which is wrong attitude.
