Sewage enters houses after RDA debris blocks drain

RAWALPINDI, March 17: Sewage has entered dozens of houses in New Amarpura after its flow was blocked by debris thrown into a drain by the city’s civic agency itself.

The Rawalpindi Develop-ment Authority (RDA) removed the discarded construction material from its plot at Committee Chowk on Tuesday and disposed it off in the nullah passing along Sarfraz Road.

“The sewage entered my house early in the morning (on Wednesday),” said Mohammad Ramzan, a resident of the area.

Local people checked for the source and found the nullah blocked by the debris.

Another resident Saleem Khan said the foul smell emitting from the sewage had made it unbearable to stay in the area. Mr Khan said his family had moved to his sister’s house in Miliatabad locality.

“After spending millions on the house what can we do when the drain water enters it and destroys carpets and other precious items,” a resident Saeed Khalid said. He blamed the civic body for the losses.

Another affected citizen said two to three inches of dirty water inundated the houses.

“The area is presenting a disgusting look and it is hard for anyone to live here with his family.”

When contacted, District Officer Solid Waste Management Mazhar Azeem said the sanitary department was working to pump out the sewage. He admitted that the debris had blocked the drain. He said an excavator had been deployed to clear the blockage, adding that 20 sanitary workers were cleaning the area.
