Residents obliged to buy water from CDA tankers

ISLAMABAD: The residents of the federal capital are buying water from tankers of Capital Development Authority (CDA) to meet their water need.

The residents of different sectors have complained that due to shortage of water they were buying water from the CDA tankers, which provide water in routine through this facility.

The residents of some areas said due to leakage of the pipelines they were getting contaminated water and they have no option but to buy water from tankers.

Zubair Khan, a resident of G-9/1 said the leaking water pipelines were not only resulting in wastage of huge quantity of water but also troubling people of the locality. He said leaking lines were the main cause of water shortage in the city.

He said the leaked water accumulated on roads and streets creating small pools of water, which were a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other germs responsible for various diseases.

“Thousands of gallons of drinking water go to waste due to this leakage. Consequently, we receive little water in our homes,” said another resident Khursheed Ahmed. “We have lodged many complaints with CDA to repair these punctured pipelines, but it fell on deaf ears,” he added.

According to CDA, the average supply to Islamabad from all resources including dams and tube wells was 112 million gallons per day (MGD). Of these, 42 MGD comes from Simly Dam, the main source of water supply to the city. An official of CDA said the Water Supply Directorate carried out the production, treatment, transmission and distribution of potable water from ground and surface sources.

“Water is produced and treated at Simly Filtration Plants, four small head works and 174 tube wells and is conveyed to the service reservoirs and intermediate pumping stations located at appropriate places within the city and further distributed to the houses through distribution network,” he added.

He said a fleet of 36 tankers was also operating to augment the supply to the consumers as and when required, on nominal charges. app
