Dr Aafia's sentence: Pakistan may request Obama for special remission
ISLAMABAD (September 25 2010): Pakistan may request the US President Barack Obama to grant special remission in Dr Aafia's sentence, as Interior Ministry has started looking for various options for her repatriation from the US.
An all party delegation comprising women Parliamentarians, having representation of all the Provinces, will be sent to US to meet the US political and government officials to show their resentment to the US government and civil society, said a spokesman of Interior Ministry here on Friday. In the wake of the US Court verdict sending Dr Aafia Siddiqui to jail for 86 years, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has directed Interior Minister Rehman Malik to make all out efforts to bring her back to Pakistan. Interior Minister has convened a high level meeting to discuss all aspect after court's verdict in Dr Aafia's case. Following decisions were taken in the meeting. A high level committee will be constituted comprising representatives of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Law & Justice and Ministry of Interior including two eminent lawyers. The Committee will look into legal aspects of her repatriation, said the spokesman, adding that the committee will suggest legal ways and means helpful in Dr Aafia Siddiqui repatriation. He said that the committee would also examine the possibility of filing an appeal against the judgement of US Court and hiring US Lawyer for the said purpose. The spokesman said that the All Party Women Parliamentary delegation comprising women Parliamentarians during their visit to the US will meet the officials of the US State Department, US Attorney General, the officials of the US Homeland Security, Legal Fraternity including Congressmen and Senators along with members of Civil Society. The delegation will raise the issue of repatriation of Dr Aafia Siddiqui with the US authorities. |
