FSC rules in favour of female judges’ appointment
LAHORE: A three-member bench of the Federal Shariat Court dismissed on Wednesday a petition challenging appointment of female judges.
The petition was filed by Rab Nawaz advocate, in which he had submitted that women could not be appointed judges of superior and lower courts, saying it was contrary to Islamic injunctions. The bench, headed by Chief Justice Agha Rafiq, dismissed the petition and ruled that women could not be barred from being appointed as judges. Separately, a full bench of the court reduced the death sentence of to two rape convicts Mukhtar and Irfan to life imprisonment. It also set aside the punishment of whipping citing grave discrepancies in the prosecution evidence. |
