CM seeks plan for more signal-free corridors

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said the previous regime had looted national resources in the name of development projects and the most corrupt people joined it and became ministers.

Talking to newsmen during his visit to Aashiyana Housing Project and Kalma Chowk extension plan here on Sunday, he called for raising voice against corruption and plunder of resources to purge society of the scourge otherwise it could bring disaster to Pakistan.

Shahbaz hailed the Supreme Court for holding accountable those who got loans written off on political basis and were involved in corruption scandals. If the written-off loans and the looted money were recovered, there would be no need of foreign aid, he added. “Corruption can be eradicated if all institutions play an effective role in this regard, while the media organisations must also play their vital role in nation building by promoting positivity,” he maintained.

The Punjab government was utilising all available resources for the welfare of masses in a transparent manner, he said.

The Aashiyana Housing Project, he said, would ensure provision of modern residential facilities to the poor, thus transforming Pakistan as was conceived and envisioned by Quaid-i-Azam and Allama Iqbal.

He said in the first phase, 500 houses would be completed here next month and handed over to lucky ones. After Lahore, he said, work on Aashiyana Scheme had also been started in Faisalabad, Sargodha, Sahiwal and Jhelum while these schemes would also be initiated in Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur, Bahawalpur and Rahim Yar Khan next year for the benefit of the poor, orphans, disabled and the families of the martyrs.

The chief minister directed the DCOs of Faisalabad, Jhelum, Sahiwal and Sargodha, who were also present on the occasion, to adopt Aashiyana Housing Project of Lahore as a role model and ensure timely and quality completion of the schemes in their respective districts.

He also directed the Lahore commissioner to consider launching of bus service for the benefit of the residents of Aashiyana Scheme, adding that citizens and shopkeepers should not face any problem during construction of link road from Ferozpur Road.

Earlier, the chief minister visited Kalma Chowk and reviewed the pace of work on the project.

The chief minister issued instructions for presenting him a plan within two weeks for making signal-free corridors at various places.

After being briefed by relevant officers of various departments, he appreciated the performance of the entire team engaged in the project and directed that the project should be beautified with horticulture.

He said the Kalma Chowk project would be completed by August 14 this year.
