Senior citizens to get 50% concession in Railway fares

ISLAMABAD: Senior citizens above the age of 60 will get a 50 percent concession in Railway fares under a programme devised by the Ministry of Social Welfare and Special Education. Sources said that the Ministry of Social Welfare had launched a programme for the welfare of senior citizens and that a draft in this regard had been sent to various stakeholders. They said that the Railway Department was the first to respond positively to the proposal. The department had announced that it would give the 50 percent concession to senior citizens in economy class, while 25 percent concession would be given in other classes, the sources said, adding that the concession facility would not apply to trains such as 41-up/42-DN Karakoram Express, 15-16-DN Karachi Express, 107-UP /108-DN, 109-up/110-DN Margalla Express, non-stop trains between Rawalpindi-Lahore, 17-UP/18-DN Millat Express and the 5-UP/6PN Buraq Express. Social Welfare Ministry officials said that the Railway Department would also set up help counters staffed with police at major railway stations to provide assistance to senior citizens and special people. They also said that separate counters had been set up at reservation offices and directives had been issued to treat senior citizens with respect. They said that wheelchairs were available at most railway stations for senior citizens’ convenience. online
