Lahore: Model Town to introduce underground wiring
* Pilot project to be completed within three months
* MTS president says entire society’s wiring will be underground within four years By Afnan Khan LAHORE: The Model Town Society (MTS) has decided to switch to underground electrical wiring to facilitate its residents and to compete with other modern societies of the city. The MTS administration has asked contractors to submit their proposals for an underground electrical wiring system in the society. However, it has already hired a local company to install the wiring in K-block to pilot the project. The company has been directed to ensure the proper completion of all roads and sewerage after completion of the project. The MTS will commence the project in the society after the completion of the pilot project, which, it was learnt, should be completed within three months. This would also include the completion of the MTS grid station. The grid station, being developed near K-block, will remedy the shortage of power currently facing the country by ensuring a smooth supply of electricity to the residents. An MTS official told Daily Times that the project has been launched following the news of similar plans of the Defence Housing Authority. “MTS residents are not ready to have their society at ‘second’ place. They want all the facilities that are available to residents of other societies,” the official said, adding that the project would help keep the society ahead of its ‘competitors’. He said that the residents have been facing problems because of the recent electricity shortage, adding that the installation of a new grid station was one of the most important things for them. Completion: MTS President Colonel ® Tahir Kardar said that the underground wiring project would be completed within four years, adding that the main project would start after the completion of the pilot project at K-block. He said that the society had already started to short list the companies who have submitted quotations for the job, adding that the applicants included a few foreign companies who have experience with similar jobs in Pakistan. Kardar said that the contract would only be awarded to the most suitable candidate, adding that the society would be looking for the following criteria: The provision of quality; the timely completion of the project; and cost-effectiveness. He added that the MTS has already hired consultants to help it in selecting the best company for the successful and efficient completion of the project. http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp...008_pg13_5 |
