Contract for two tunnels awarded to NLC
Rawalpindi :The Punjab government has awarded the contract for construction of two tunnels at Railway Bridge to the National Logistic Cell (NLC) and directed it to submit a report for approval. PML-N MNA Malik Shakil Awan stated this while talking to ‘The News’ here on Friday. According to Malik Shakil Awan, earlier the project was to be executed by the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA). However Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif, while presiding over a meeting in the Punjab House recently, had taken the project from the RDA and handed it over to the NLC. The work on two tunnels would be initiated before the end of the current fiscal year. It would be completed in three months — before the general elections — likely to be held in October this year. The project would be implemented from Mareer Chowk to Kutchery Chowk and from Liaquat Bagh to Mareer Chowk. Malik Shakil Awan said that Shahbaz Sharif has asked the NLC to work on the project including its designing and estimate of work so that funds could be allocated for implementing it to overcome traffic congestion on busy Benazir Bhutto Road. All matters would be decided upon submission of the report by the NLC, he stated. During work on the project, traffic flow between Mareer Chowk and Liaquat Bagh would be diverted to alternative routes to avoid traffic jams. The chief minister would lay the foundation stone of the project, he said. |
