Karachi: Estimated numbers of illegal immigrants in different areas of city

The Sindh Home Department (SHD) has directed the Karachi police to compile a list of foreigners residing illegally in Karachi, especially Afghans, Burmese and Bengalis. The move comes after continued reports that these illegal immigrants are involved in various criminal activities, sources told The News.

During the initial compilation of data of illegal foreigners, it was learnt that more than two million Bengalis and Burmese and more than one million Afghans reside illegally in Karachi in various Goths. Police stations situated in districts Malir, East, West, South and Central have been directed to compile a comprehensive and up-to-date list in this regard.

It may be noted here that the maintenance of data regarding illegal residents is the duty of the City District Government Karachi (CDGK).

The police have also been directed to register these illegal foreigners with the help of the National Alien Registration Authority (NARA) and complete this process within three to four days.

Records show that these foreigners were indulging in various criminal activities reported over the past few years in Karachi, including terror-related activities, and most of them are residing in small Goths.

It is alleged that they obtain mud huts at cheap rates, without needing to submit any documentation.

Sources maintained that most illegal foreigners in Afghan Basti were involved in arms smuggling, narcotics, extortions, kidnapping for ransom and other criminal offences including terrorist attempts.

They were also involved in robberies and snatching cars, motorcycles and heavy vehicles.

The SHD has therefore ordered that these illegal foreigners be registered and a list be compiled immediately.
