Preparations in full swing for sixth population census
By Irfan Aligi
KARACHI: The town administrations in the city have started necessary preparations for the forthcoming National Census Campaign. The town nazims in this regard have taken various important measures to ensure 100 percent participation from residents of the town concerned. Different training and public awareness projects have also been initiated while meetings for finalising necessary steps and expenditures have also been held ahead of the census. New Karachi Town Nazim Akhtar Hussain told Daily Times that an important meeting regarding the census has been called on Monday. The town has adopted a comprehensive strategy to ensure that each resident of the town participates in the census. In this regard, a centralised camp office has been established at Maulvi Tameezuddin School where the training process is being carried out. Hussain added that New Karachi Town has made special arrangements for creating awareness among the people of the town so that they participate in the census for which special teams under the supervision of union council nazims have been constituted. It would also be ensured that no citizen should escape the census and in case some one does not participate, he will be dealt with according to the law and will be compelled to register. The town will bear all food, water and transportation expenses in this regard. Liaquatabad Town Nazim Osama Qadri told Daily Times that the town has already started training around 1,300 staffers for carrying out the census process in the town. Every union council in the town has also been declared as the office of the census circle supervisor while the Town Office has been given to the assistant commissioner census since the past six months. The town would bear all expenses such as food, water and transportation. North Nazimabad Nazim Mumtaz Hameed told Daily Times that training of the census staffers has already been started and special arrangements have been made to ensure complete compliance to the census requirements. We have already chalked out plans including special teams that would contact people of the town as part of the awareness campaign. Saddar Town Nazim Muhammad Dilawar told Daily Times that all needed arrangements have been completed for a smooth census process. The town has made arrangements for training of around 1,600 staffers. There are around 250,000 residential units in Saddar Town while the population is estimated to have reached around 1500,000. In order to ensure 100 percent participation in the census, the town administration has banned all leaves, transfers and postings of the town’s staffers. Gulberg Town Nazim Muhammad Kamal, in a statement issued on Saturday, said that all future development projects would be based on the figures obtained from the forthcoming census. Therefore, it is imperative that the census be met with national spirit. Karachi has turned into a huge city but as accurate data could not be obtained from the past census, it has faced many haphazard situations regarding development requirements. http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp...009_pg12_1 |
