Islamabad: National Center for Physics poised to become world-class research centre

ISLAMABAD: Efforts are afoot to transform National Center for Physics (NCP) into a reputable international research center, said the NCP director general, Dr Hamid Saleem, while addressing the first scientific spring organised by the center here on Monday.

“To become a vibrant research nation at the international level, Pakistan needs active, enthusiastic and professional young researchers,” Saleem said, adding, “Unavailability of experts and limited academic manpower in our institutions are the main hurdles to academic development and research culture in Pakistan.”

He said the NCP was looking for experts in different areas of physics and related fields that is why it was promoting and encouraging collaboration between Pakistani universities and international research institutions to optimise the use of available resources.

The center has developed necessary infrastructure for workshops, conferences and other academic activities on its premises. Few laboratories, including a 5MV tandem accelerator and high-energy physics laboratories, have also been established. “We are very much focused on developing very active research groups in different areas of physics and also trying to take well-known senior scientists on board,” Dr Saleem said.

The aim of holding the scientific spring is to disseminate knowledge and work at national level and to unveil the facilities available at NCP.

The activity will focus on the core areas of physics and its related fields like accelerator technology, astrophysics, cosmology, condensed matter physics, higher energy physics, laser physics, nanosciences, and plasma physics.

The purpose of this activity is to bring together scientists, engineers, technologists, and students and to familiarize them with the present and future areas of immense development.

The activity consists of invited lectures by national and international scientists, engineers and specialists. Foreign scientists from different universities of the UK, China, Tashkent and Bangladesh are participating as speakers. app
