UK supermarket to sell Pakistani mangoes
LONDON: A leading British supermarket chain has signed a deal with the Pakistani High Commission to sell Pakistani mangoes. Pakistani mangoes have been well known in wholesale and retail markets and ethnic stores in the UK for many years, but problems with logistics and the lack of awareness of Global GAP and BRC standards among the producer-exporter base has largely kept them off supermarket shelves. Asda, the UK’s second largest chain by market share, is working with its direct sourcing arm IPL to bring the fruit in from 15 growers with GlobalGAP certification. The retailer will be targeting 25-30 of its stores that perform best on ethnic foods. A spokesman for the retailer said Wednesday this is a trial and “if it is successful in those stores then we will look at doing it in more.” The season which began from June, will last till September for this year’s trial and the mangoes will retail at an unconfirmed but slightly higher price point than Asda’s standard mango offe |
