SC takes suo motu notice of Margalla Hills Tunnel Project
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court took suo motu notice of the Tunnel project at Margalla Hills, Express News reported.
The Attorney General Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Parliamentary Affairs have been given notices for a hearing on September 26. Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, leading a three-member bench will be hearing the case. Pakistan Muslim League Quaid’s Mushahid Hussain Syed and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Roedad Khan have said that the Margalla Hills Tunnel Project is not feasible. Margalla Hill Society opposed the project since the beginning and sought intervention of the Supreme Court. Background During a meeting on August 23 presided by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif the Tunnel Project was resurrected after being inactive for a long period of time. The Prime Minister informed the meeting, that “a tunnel through the Margalla Hills to link Islamabad with Haripur would provide a shorter route to commuters of Gilgit- Baltistan, Mansehra and Abbottabad”. CDA and National Highways Authority are in charge of the project, both of which had been directed to undertake all preliminary measures and work out details with record speed. |
