India planning to increase uranium production
NEW DELHI: India is planning to increase uranium production in order to build eight new 700MW reactors, a senior Indian nuclear scientist told reporters on Wednesday. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) Director Srikumar Banerjee said the designs for the new reactors were ready, adding that the new reactors would help boost India’s nuclear power generation to around 10,000MW. Sources said that, at present, India had a nuclear power generation capacity of 4,000MW, adding that existing plants were operating at just 50 percent capacity due to a crunch in uranium supply. They said the Indo-US nuclear deal would also help increase uranium supplies. Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research former director LK Krishnan said the nuke deal would be a “paradigm shift” in the energy scenario. He said the deal would enable India to buy 1,000MW reactors, adding, “We should go for the deal.” iftikhar gilani http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp...008_pg7_51 |
