LAHORE - The government has finally decided to re-open all the educational institutions across Punjab and NWFP from tomorrow (Monday) while they are already open in Sindh and Balochistan. The government will, however, strictly monitor the security arrangements failing which they can again be closed.
A high-level meeting of the district administration held on Saturday on security arrangements of educational institutions maintained that they were at war but at the same time it was not possible to keep the institutions closed. The meeting decided to activate girls guide, boy scouts, youth and mohallah committees to keep an eye on the terrorists.
The educational institutions were closed down following a suicide attack at International Islamic University, Islamabad, killing nine students. The institutions were re-opened after five days closure with the assurance that security arrangements would be made to check any untoward incident. Majority of the government and private sector educational institutions were, however, again closed due to security lapses. The government asked them to construct eight-feet high boundary wall, barricades/hurdles on the gates, to install CCTVs, walk-through gates, metal detectors, closure of rear gates, posting of armed guards in uniform, display of ID cards and compulsory uniform by the students. A joint commission of the government and private educational institutions was also formed to monitor the arrangements. The raiding teams comprising SPs of concerned division and officials of the education department also conducted raids to check the security arrangements and take appropriate action against them for security lapses
The government also closed the primary schools as a precautionary measures. However, there was dispute over the provision of security between the government and the private institutions. The government, however, maintained that security of their respective institution was their own responsibility and the government would take action if there were any lapses. Moreover, the institutions were also retrained to shift the burden on parents by raising the tuition fee in the name of security.
