Govt needs to ensure safety of forestlands during allotment

LAHORE – The allotment of state land under the Graduate Scheme to agriculture and the forestry graduates is a magnificent notion however this scheme is still incomplete from many angles.
The province is already facing reduction in forestry land as such the government needs to ensure safety of forestlands during allotment of the land to the graduates. This was the upshot of the ‘Policy Dialogue on Allotment of State Land under the Graduate Scheme for Agriculture, Forestry Graduates’ held at local hotel here on Wednesday. Citizens’ Commission for Human Development (CCHD) organised the programme, which was participated by MPAs, representative of political parties, Board of Revenue, Livestock, Agriculture and Information Departments, NGOs besides the universities professors and the students. Executive Director CCHD Farrah Parvaiz Saleh moderated the session.
“The Board of Revenue have distribute 1,500 lots comprising 12 and a half and 24 acres of the land from the total allocated land of 5,704 acres in 26 districts of the Punjab,” the representative BoR informed the participants and added that total 5,206 applications were received for the purpose.
The questions whether initiatives taken by the government to economically facilitate the fresh graduates for the cultivation, about the water availability, monitoring and evolution process of the allotted land were asked to the speakers by Dr Mansoor Khan of PTI, Diya Mirza of Save The Nation and other participants.
PML-N MPA Arifa Khalid also pointed out some grey areas in the scheme which might create problem in the future and urged the policy makers to ensure the transparency and monitoring in land distribution system in the scheme beside giving participation to female graduates in the programme etc.
Dr Mansor Khan added that the policy was full of ambiguity and also it did not address the water crises, which would be faced not only by the allotees but also by the whole nation in future. Farrah Parvaiz thanked the participants of the dialogue and urged the need of more debates at all concerned levels in future to ensure the transparency and fulfilment of weak areas of the provincial government programme.
