VCCCP’s 8th Annual Car Show
Historical vehicles of 1920s displayed
By Asad Farooq KARACHI: Vintage and Classic Car Club of Pakistan (VCCCP) organised its 8th Annual Car Show at the Forum here on Sunday. A remarkable collection of exotic and historical cars from the decade of 1920s till date, including Rolls Royce, Jaguar, Cadillac and others, were displayed at the exhibition. Besides display of beautiful and unique cars, popular music of 1960s and 70s was also played on the occasion, created sensation environment with a touch of past. Ali, a car collector, said told Daily Times that keeping a car collection was an expensive but very splendid hobby. He said that spare parts of ancient model cars were imported from the United States. “It costs Rs 200,000 to Rs 400,000 for annual maintenance of each ancient car,” he said. VCCCP President and Founder Mohsin Ikram told Daily Times that the purpose of this exhibition was to safeguard the ancient cars and to raise awareness among people in this regard. He regretted that a large number of ancient cars in Pakistan had been exported abroad or being sold to scrap dealers. Commenting on the feedback of the car shows of the VCCCP, he said that a large number of people were contacting the club to gain knowledge about the use of old cars. “The response of people is increasing day by day as a result of these types of activities,” he said. Mohsin said President Asif Ali Zardari, Pakistan Muslim League (N) Chief Nawaz Sharif and Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan had invited him to discuss preservation of this heritage of Pakistan. He further said that they appreciated the efforts of VCCCP and exchanged views and suggestions in this regard. Replying to a question, he said that the club was organising activities without any support of the government but now they had decided to ask for the assistant of the government to form a club house and a car museum. “We also want to soften the image of Pakistan among international community through such type of events. More than 100 foreigners visited the exhibition today, he added. A large number of ancient model cars were placed in the exhibition with tags describing model, features and qualities of these cars. Stalls of club souvenirs, including T-shirts, caps, foodstuff, toy cars and other items were also set up on the occasion. |
