CDA fails to run sewerage treatment plant
ISLAMABAD - The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has failed to successfully implement the sewerage treatment plant project resulting in huge losses to the civic body. Many sectors and housing societies located in Sector E-11 do not have proper sewage treatment facilities resulting in the blockage of the main sewerage lines. A CDA official, seeking anonymity, said some of the Sector E-11 housing societies had sued the CDA for depriving them of the facility.
The project was initiated to treat the city’s waste water and to use it for agricultural purposes and for watering parks and greenbelts. The plant was launched decades ago with three filtration units, which stopped working in the late 90s. In 2009 a project for the repair of the three units and the installation of a fourth one using a French loan of Rs 936 million was proposed. According to the source, the government approved the project without examining its cost and utility. An official of a private housing society in sector E-11 said the authority was pressing the housing societies to construct their own treatment plants. He added that CDA has a single plant for the entire city, where only 10 per cent of the sewage is treated. He added that the civic body was forced to take measures for the disposal of the waste water. Due to poor financial conditions, the authority could not install tanks and a water supply network in the periphery of the plant and that the plant was not serving its purpose due to the negligence of some CDA officials. |
