Punjab CM unsatisfied with police performance, offers 100% pay raise on improvement
RAWALPINDI: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Wednesday expressed his dissatisfaction with the police performance to control crime and develop good policing.
He was addressing a ceremony in connection with the passing out of assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) and police head constables at Police College Sihala. Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Shaukat Javed, Police College Sihala Commandant Dr Waseem Kosar, Deputy Commandant Maj ® Fateh Sher Joya, Advisor to Chief Minister Jehanzaib Burki, Members of National Assembly (MNAs) Malik Ibrar, Dr Tariq Chaudhry and Tahira Aurganzaib, Members of Provincial Assembly (MPAs) Shehryar Riaz and Sarfraz Afzal were present on this occasion. He said police department failed to build a relationship of trust with the general public as people considered them a symbol of horror rather than security providers. He said dictatorship, weak structure of institutions, lack of resources and training directly impacted the police performance. The CM said the Punjab government was considering provision of latest security gadgets and financial support to police so that they could overcome crime and ensure security to the life and property of citizens. He stressed the need for independence judiciary to provide speedy justice to the poor. The CM said foreign investment, peace and poverty alleviation were directly linked to the independence of judiciary. He urged the federal government to take measures for provision of speedy justice to people. He appreciated the efforts of IGP for bringing revolutionary changes in police culture. He hoped that the newly recruited police officials would serve the people and improve the police image. He said if the police succeeded in changing the Thana culture, 100 percent increase in their salaries would be announced and they would be provided with better living facilities. He said police stations were meant to serve general public, but unfortunately they were not serving this purpose for obvious reasons.
