Courts gradually reducing cases backlog since NJP implemented
ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court Registrar and National Judicial Policy-Making Committee (NJPMC) Secretary Dr Faqir Hussain said the courts have disposed of 330,122 cases since the implementation of new judicial policy on June 1, 2009. He was addressing a press conference on Friday. He said the new policy was aimed at clearing the backlog and eliminating corruption. He said the policy has set a timeline for the disposal of the cases. Giving details of the pending cases in the Supreme Court, he said 18,392 cases were pending on May 31, while 1,920 new cases were instituted in June. He said the Supreme Court had disposed of 2,932 cases by June 30. Dr Faqir said the backlog in the Federal Shariat Court (FSC) was 1,993 on May 31, which increased to 2,082 by June 30. The FSC disposed of 116 cases in June. He said the backlog in the Lahore High Court was 106,724 on May 31, which increased by 12,803 in June. He said the Lahore High Court had disposed of 28,521 cases. He said the backlog of criminal and civil cases in the Sindh High Court was 24,044 on May 31, which increased by 1,864 in June. He said the court had disposed of 1,338 cases. The backlog in the Peshawar High Court was 12,470 on May 31. He said the court had disposed of 2,066 cases. He said the backlog in the Balochistan High Court was 4,068 on May 31. The court had disposed of 489 cases. In pursuance of policy recommendations that no judicial officer would work on deputation on an ex-cadre post, all judicial officers working in federal and provincial departments have been repatriated to their respective high courts for reassignments. He said the conference on the implementation of National Judicial Policy was scheduled to be held on July 4 and 5 in Islamabad. masood rehman
