Rescue workers save more than 20 lives in seven incidents
* Four fires erupt, three roofs cave in Staff Report LAHORE: Rescue officials remained busy all day as they saved more than 20 people in seven separate incidents on Tuesday. A fire broke out at Ghulam Qadir’s hosiery godown in the Shah Alam Gate area on Tuesday morning due to a short circuit, and engulfed the adjacent hosiery godown. Rescue 1122 officials and Fire Brigade units reached there and put the fire out after more than three hours of effort. Six firefighters also fell unconscious during rescue activities. Another fire broke out at a bakery in Z-Block of the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) due to a short circuit. It took the rescue teams two hours to extinguish the fire. Another bakery in Township also caught fire due to a short circuit. The fire was put out by rescue officials after half an hour. An electronic items warehouse at Fawara Chowk, Shah Alam Market, caught fire due to another instance of short circuiting, however, the rescue officials managed to control the situation after an hour. Warehouse owners Abdul Jabbar and Azam received burns in the incident, and were rushed to Mayo Hospital. Collapses: The roof of Government MC Girls School, Boostan Colony, Kot Lakhpat, collapsed due to heavy rain on Tuesday. No one got hurt, but several teachers and students were trapped inside the school as the water level in the area rose to five feet. The rescue officials reached there and evicted 10 teachers and five girls from the building. In another incident, the roof of a house at Bara Dari Road, Shahdara, caved in and two sisters Shazia (22) and Haleema (20) were trapped under the debris. Rescue 1122 officials got them out and rushed them to Mayo Hospital. Separately the roof of a house in Green Town collapsed, and owner Ahsan was trapped under the debris.
